The Russian Arctic National Park is fifty five hundred square miles and was created in 2009. This makes it the third largest national park in Russia. The park covers both land and a large part of the Arctic Ocean. This helps in not only protecting land organisms, but marine mammals as well. Polar bears, bowhead whales, gray whales, walruses, and numerous bird colonies call this park home. The immense area is known as an important cultural site because of the discovery of the isolated Arctic territory and its colonization. During the rule of the Soviet Union, the park was polluted with enormous amounts of waste and pollutants. This destroyed much of the stunning landscape and killed countless animals and vegetation.
