Hockey was originally called “bandy” and it started in the 1890s. The rules varied dramatically to the game of hockey we know today; such as it was played with a ball and not a puck, and it followed the rules of today’s field hockey more closely. The ice hockey we all know and love was introduced to Russia in the 1930s in the USSR, and turned into a national sport after World War 2.
